Short answer
Five stages are typically required: define audience and market; select ingredients and dosage form; formulate and prototype; evaluate quality and market requirements; confirm production and supply.
1. Define an actionable product brief
Clarify who the product is for, how it will be used, the target market, preferred dosage form, commercial boundaries and launch timing.
2. Choose ingredients, formulation and dosage form together
Ingredient characteristics, target dose, stability, flavor, process and cost interact. Evaluating dosage form early helps avoid late redesign.
3. Validate the real product experience with prototypes
Review appearance, flavor, solubility, physical state, swallowing or mixing experience and packaging fit against clear criteria.
4. Include quality and market requirements in design
Ingredient admission, labels, claims and testing plans vary by market. Qualifications and compliance must be confirmed for the specific product, site and market.
5. Confirm production, inventory and delivery
Freeze formulation and key specifications, then confirm packaging, production schedule, quality release and logistics.
